Mount Katahdin Expedition 2010

Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak (5,267 feet) is the  north east's ski mountaineering best kept secret.  Katahdin translated in Abnaki Native American tongue means "great mountain" .  This granite monolith lives up to its name and is the highest mountain in Maine and stretches along a four-mile-long- wind blown ridge that includes many highpoints: two summits; Baxter Peak, Hamlin Ridge, and Pamola Peak.

Since 1926 Mount Katahdin has been the objective of hardened New England Skiers and Mountaineers as the mountain offers spectacular ski descents and long sustained ice climbs.  The approach consists  of two (2)  full  strenuous days of cross country skiing 16 miles until you reach advanced base camp.  Once  at base camp, you are overcome by the awe inspiring view that very few get to see in the winter months.

Winter use on Mount Katahdin should not be taken lightly due to frequency of avalanches, ice fall and extreme weather.  Winter use on Mount Katahdin is strictly regulated by  The Baxter  State Park  Authority of Maine, and winter users must have prior experience in avalanche assessment, winter camping, winter mountaineering and  wilderness first aid.  Despite the required pre-requisites and regulated winter use, 21 people have lost their lives in the park between 1963 and 1998.

Due to the remote location of Mount Katahdin, winter expeditions  must be completely self reliant as search and rescue operations are not available within the park.

The March 2010 Mount Katahdin Expedition is seeking qualified expedition members. This expedition is considered a "common adventure" and is not a guided trip.  Interested parties must contact the  expedition leader  before November 1,  2009 at: bobgiolito@yahoo.com.

We are 7 miles from Killington (the largest ski resort on the east coast) and have 100's of miles of cross country and snow shoe trails to explore. Just contact us to help put together any size camp.
